BANGKOK, Thailand – A 48-year-old woman and her three-year-old daughter were seriously injured after falling from the fourth floor of an apartment building in Bangkok’s Ratchathewi district on 19 September. Police said the mother, who had been diagnosed with depression, had expressed fears that someone intended to harm her, and both were taken to Ramathibodi Hospital and were later reported to be safe as the investigation continued.

Pol Lt Jutthaphon Mueang Song, deputy investigation inspector at Phaya Thai Police Station, received the report at Phet Siam Apartment in Soi Phetchaburi 37, Makkasan. Police were joined at the scene by emergency teams from Ramathibodi Hospital and the Ruam Katanyu Foundation, with responders finding Yupin Chedchai, 48, and her daughter, Phattharin Thinsung, lying close together and breathing weakly in the five-storey building’s rear area. Yupin was on her back wearing a black short-sleeved shirt and white-and-black patterned shorts, while her daughter was found face down in a yellow short-sleeved top and shorts, with a pink towel nearby.

The pair had fallen from the rear balcony of room 417 on the fourth floor, and rescue workers took them to Ramathibodi Hospital for treatment. Officers later went to room 417 where they found the door locked from inside, forcing entry but finding no evidence of a struggle or disturbance in the room.

Police learned that Yupin had separated from her husband and had lived at the apartment with her two daughters for several years. She was not working, and her younger brother and other relatives had been helping with her monthly rent of more than 3,000 baht and daily living costs. Witnesses told police that Yupin had previously experienced what they described as hallucinations, saying she had repeatedly told other residents that someone was going to harm her.

Pol Lt Jutthaphon said officers had not yet been able to interview Yupin because she was undergoing medical treatment, and based on witness accounts police initially suspected that severe stress and fears for her safety may have led to the incident. The police investigation remains ongoing into whether the fall was accidental or deliberate.
